What is a sustainable skincare?
Sustainability means less of an impact on the environment and human livelihoods. Sustainable skin care is essentially choosing products that will meet our skin and beauty needs, without harshly impacting the environment or safety of humans.
We all want to make good product choices, for the environment and for ourselves. It can definitely be overwhelming to think of all the potential impacts, the certifications you should follow, the ingredients and the list goes on and on… But it doesn’t have to be difficult to build a sustainable skin care routine.
Remember, we vote with our dollars - so choosing a better product makes the largest possible impact! It is our responsibility to make environmentally conscious choices… This involves a little bit of planning first…
What makes skincare sustainable?
Sustainability is a broad term so you could end up writing down a whole list of sustainability factors to test brands against.
we’ve narrowed the factors down into two categories which we’ve listed below:
- Environment
- Animal welfare
Environment:
Sustainable skincare brands should be doing everything they can to make sure their environmental impact is a positive one, by using non toxic ingredients, and Sustainable Packaging.
- Non-toxic ingredients
Non-toxic refers to products that don’t contain any manufactured herbicides, GMOs, artificial fertilisers, preservatives, parabens or other toxic ingredients.
- Sustainable Packaging
Look for skincare brands that use post-consumer recycled materials or packaging that can be easily recycled like aluminum or glass.
Animal welfare
Animal welfare is a huge problem in the skincare industry. Many brands test on animals or use animal derivatives. look for skincare products that are cruelty free (means that they were not tested on animals in any part of their development) and vegan (Vegan products contain no animal derived ingredients such as collagen or beeswax), Sustainable skincare shouldn’t contain any animal derivatives.
